2023 Summer Associates
Remember your days as a summer associate?
Many of our attorneys and alumni spent at least one law school summer here at Husch Blackwell, exploring practice areas, learning about the everyday world of practicing law, and benefitting from the mentorship of our incredible team. This year’s program, which wrapped up at the end of July, was our largest ever as we welcomed 112 students from 47 law schools across the country.
Our summer associates were as diverse and talented as our attorneys and alumni are: the 2023 class included a published author, a U.S. national team rower, a classically trained vocalist, an upcoming New York City Marathoner, and a former actor. “We recognize this talented group had many choices for their summer experience, and we could not be more excited that they chose to be here,” said Chief Executive Paul Eberle. “They bring exceptional talent, and we are thrilled to be a part of their career journeys.”
Chair Catherine Hanaway noted the program’s importance as a pipeline for hiring. “As a firm, we have a strong commitment to finding talented people and nurturing their career success,” she said. “It’s extremely gratifying to walk the halls and see many summer program alumni who are helping to drive our growth trajectory.”
Each student is paired with an individual mentor at the firm, which helps encourage many to return to Husch Blackwell after graduation. The program also provides ample opportunities to network and to enjoy the firm’s uncommon culture. In addition to a Summer Associate Retreat held in June in St. Louis—which included opportunities to meet Executive Board members and observe a hot sauce eating competition between Catherine Hanaway, Partner Myers Dill, and Chief Information Officer Blake Rooney—summer associates attended a wide variety of events in their individual cities. Offices offered cornhole tournaments, poker nights at partners’ homes, golf games, picnics, trips to baseball games and local restaurants, and even a scavenger hunt around Washington, D.C.
It’s no surprise that the firm is ranked among the top 10 law firms for summer programs across the United States. We’ve been honored by Law360 Pulse as number nine and are one of only two firms not in the Am Law 50 to make the top 10.
