I hope your 2023 is off to a successful start! Earlier this year, we released our Husch Blackwell 2022 Annual Report, which demonstrates the remarkable growth our firm has celebrated over the past year. While 2022 was a difficult year for much of the legal industry, Husch Blackwell continued to press forward, marking growth in revenue, headcount, and profitability. In fact, we’re one of only 20 Am Law 100 firms to grow in all these areas every year for the past five years. Your time with Husch Blackwell has no doubt contributed to our continued success.
From 2017 to 2022, we saw an increase of 59.2% in revenue and 61.1% in net income, with a year-over-year increase of more than 5% in both demand and attorney FTE, as well as nearly a 10% year-over-year increase in revenue per attorney.
Our growth is due in large part to the great talent among our professionals. In 2022, we brought on 143 laterals, 48 new associates and also saw exponential growth in our summer associate program, an important pipeline of diverse talent. Last summer, 100 talented students joined us and we expect 112 law students this summer. Our summer program was ranked among the top 10 programs across the country by summer associates themselves, according to Law360 data.
The firm’s growing bench of talent is supported by our Future of Work strategy. Our virtual office, The Link, has grown dramatically since its 2020 founding and plays an important role in allowing us to recruit talented professionals across the country, regardless of their location. Today, The Link is our largest office by headcount, with 537 members, including 128 attorneys, and the growth in yearly cloud investment has enhanced collaboration across the country. While the expansion of our hybrid and remote workforces has allowed us to decrease our physical footprint by nearly 100,000 square feet over the past three years, we continue to open new brick-and-mortar offices in places where our clients need us to be. We expect to open a Minneapolis office later this spring.
