We’re celebrating the remarkable career and well-earned retirement of Joe Ellis! Joe’s career has been marked by his expertise in litigating a wide variety of toxic tort cases, including managing dockets involving thousands of plaintiffs. His work has significantly impacted Fortune 100 companies and large, privately owned manufacturing firms, where he has effectively handled cases involving environmental, agricultural, commercial, and civil matters.

Throughout his tenure, Joe has become known for his extensive litigation experience in personal injury defense, with a particular focus on defending against wrongful death claims. His strategic oversight of hundreds of asbestos cases has been notable, as he carefully managed every aspect—from discovery and witness depositions to trial preparation. Joe’s client-focused approach is evident; he consistently consults with clients to understand their litigation goals, articulates his strategies, and ensures the focus remains on achieving the most favorable outcomes.

Check out a brief Q&A below and join us in wishing him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.

When did you join Husch Blackwell?

I joined HB on October 3, 2016. With ending here in 2025, that’s over eight years with HB and 40 years of practicing law.

Name an HB mentor, past or present, who helped guide your legal career, and describe how.

If I had to pick one person at HB who I owe a lot to, it would be J.Y. Miller

Do you have a favorite case or work memory from your time at the firm?

I have to say the people, just good teammates all around.

What will you enjoy doing in your retirement?

I hate to be cliché, but I will enjoy spending time with family, traveling, and focusing on fitness. We love outdoor trips, and we plan to visit more national parks.

Enjoy the next chapter, Joe!
