We are proud to celebrate the retirement of Gina Carter, an attorney in our Madison office and a valued member of the Financial Services & Capital Market industry group.

Gina’s legal journey began with a degree in international relations and work drafting Wisconsin’s first residential landlord-tenant regulations, inspiring her passion for advocacy. She went on to build a distinguished practice in intellectual property and credit union law, leading Husch Blackwell’s Credit Union team and advising on a range of legal matters, including governance, mergers, and data protection. She also litigated IP cases in federal courts, earning widespread respect.

Upon her retirement, Gina was proud to announce that the leadership of the Credit Union Practice would be entrusted to two talented colleagues. Marci Kawski (Partner | Madison) and Brenda Barrett (Partner | Austin), both highly experienced credit union attorneys, will oversee the firm’s credit union work. They will be supported by a dedicated team of attorneys who bring extensive knowledge across all legal areas essential to credit unions and who deeply understand and value the unique “credit union difference.”

Most recently, Gina was asked by the Government of Kenya to serve on the five-member Committee of Experts to review the proposed Credit Union Regulatory Act, which will govern credit unions in Kenya.

Check out a brief Q&A below and join us in wishing her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.

When did you join Husch Blackwell?

In January 2005, I joined Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek (a legacy HB firm) to lead its intellectual property litigation team.

Do you have a favorite case or work memory from your time at the firm?

Besides being an intellectual property lawyer, I brought a credit union legal practice to the firm when I joined. Representing the industry nationally with a team of talented regulatory and financial services lawyers at the firm has been the highlight of my nearly 20 years at Whyte Hirschboeck and Husch Blackwell.

What will you enjoy doing in your retirement?

I plan to continue serving as a volunteer board official for the largest credit union in northern California and volunteering for an immigrant support and rights group in Sonoma County, California, where I now live. I also plan to take Master Gardener certification classes, continue improving my French, and travel more around the globe with family and friends. Most importantly, it is important to me to try to fight the good fight for our constitutional democracy where and how I can.
