Husch Blackwell mourns the passing of retired St. Louis partner Neil Huber on January 31, 2024 in Rochester, New York. He leaves behind three sons, Chris, Matt, and Jeff, as well as three siblings, Gayle, Bill, and Ken. Neil was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Meimei, in December 2023.

After moving from his native New York to St. Louis in 1972, Neil became a partner at Peper Martin in the late 70s with a focus on real estate law. Twenty years later, he helped orchestrate Peper’s merger with Blackwell Sanders, which became Husch Blackwell in 2008. Neil retired from Husch Blackwell in 2012 and moved to Santa Rosa, California with Meimei before returning to New York in 2021 to be closer to family.

In an internal email, St. Louis Office Managing Partner Bob Tomaso wrote:

“Neil was a great mentor to many (including me) and was always eager to help others both inside and outside the firm. In fact, in 1997, when the Blackwell Sanders firm was looking to establish a presence in St. Louis, the Blackwell firm first talked with Neil (then a partner at Peper Martin) about him joining Blackwell. Neil told the Blackwell Sanders leadership that he would not be interested unless the entire Peper Martin law firm were the target.

He was an avid sports fan, rooting mostly for any Syracuse or St. Louis team. He was also an avid golfer, although that ‘fade away jumper’ golf swing should not have been viewed without significant eye protection. I have talked with Neil’s son Matt, a tenured professor at Syracuse, several times this week, and the family is still trying to decide on arrangements, although an event honoring Neil in St. Louis seems likely.

Matt said that anyone who wants to remember Neil might consider a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation (the disease from which MeiMei had died only six weeks before Neil) or to Syracuse University.”
