Husch Blackwell mourns the passing of retired St. Louis partner Alan Popkin on January 20, 2024 at his home in St. Louis. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy; his daughters, Maureen Chiquet, Suzanne Popkin, and Andrea Main; his stepchildren, Brook Spear and Michael Blake Morris; ten grandchildren; many friends; and his beloved dogs, Georgie, BoBo, Bella Lulu, Scout, and Sixty.

St. Louis Office Managing Partner Bob Tomaso issued this internal email about Alan:

“We are sorry to share the sad news of the passing of our former partner, Alan Popkin. Alan was one of the great trial lawyers in St. Louis—if not the country—and he was a great mentor and close friend to many of our lawyers. In fact, as many of you likely recall, Alan was still trying complex cases well into his 80s.

Exceedingly bright, he was an elegant and refined man who enjoyed, among many other things, fine wine, a good game of bridge, and fishing in some of nature’s greatest spots. For many years when we officed at 190 Carondelet, you could find Alan, Tom Carney, and David Sobelman having lunch in the cigar bar at The Ritz.”

After a brief acting career on Broadway, Alan enrolled in Washington University School of Law and graduated first in his class. He argued a case in front of the United States Supreme Court and became a member of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. Alan also loved the game of bridge and achieved the rank of Grand Life Master, a title only currently held by one other person in St. Louis.

A visitation and funeral service were held at Berger Memorial Chapel in St. Louis, and memorial contributions may be made to the APA of Missouri.
