Congratulations to Chris Courts, alumnus of Husch Blackwell predecessor firm Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, for being named senior vice president and general counsel, corporate secretary and compliance officer of Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling. With more than 15 years of tenure at Novelis, Chris will be responsible for leading all legal matters.

We'd like to congratulate Husch Blackwell alumna Beth Emery on her retirement from GridLiance. Beth started with the firm in 2011 then joined GridLiance as senior vice president, general counsel & secretary in 2014. Best wishes for a wonderful retirement.

Wonderful news for Husch Blackwell alumna Shirley Mensah! The U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri announced that U.S. Magistrate Judge Shirley Mensah would be sworn in for a five-year term as Chief Magistrate Judge, as U.S. Magistrate Judge Nannette Baker concluded her five-year term. This occasion marks the first time in the history of the Court where the position of Chief Judge has passed from one African American judge to another. Congratulations, Shirley!

Congratulations to HB alumnus Joe Cornelison for being named Chair of Missouri's Education Board in 2021! Joe, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, was most recently senior counsel at Husch Blackwell specializing in educational institution law. “I look forward to working with the state’s colleges and universities and workforce partners to ensure the quality and accessibility of higher education and workforce opportunities in 2021 and beyond,” Cornelison said.

Congratulations to Husch Blackwell alumna Laura Staley on her 2020 In-House Counsel Award by Missouri Lawyers Media in the private company category. Since leaving Husch Blackwell five years ago, Laura has been employment counsel for Enterprise Holdings. Congratulations to HB alumnus and friend Senator Kirk Watson, who is now the Founding Dean of the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs, for being honored by Texas Appleseed with the 2020 J. Chrys Dougherty Good Apple Award. Through a virtual celebration on November 12, the Senator was acknowledged for his exemplary leadership, effectiveness as a public servant and commitment to improving the lives of Texans.
